At one point, we had six 30-gallon trash cans on site: four up front by the vacuums, one by our plaza, and one in the back. I quickly realized I couldn’t keep up with the volume. No matter how many cans I provided, people would completely fill them.
Eventually, I removed four of the cans and worked with our local police department to get on directed patrol, which sends an officer by once a shift. That helped address the loitering issue, and in turn, it solved a big part of the trash problem.
What surprised me most was the pattern: whether I put out 20 cans or just 2, people would fill whatever was available.
