Welding Stainless Spray Bar Question

Waxman

Super Moderator
The vertical portion of my spray bar is cracked just below the gusset at the top.

I have had a friend weld stainless before for another section of spray bar assembly (not this part now leaking).

He did fix it, but it took 4 tries of thinking we had it welded properly, and reinstalling, only to find small leaks until the fourth try, which had no leaks.

My question is; is there a simple way to inspect a weld to make see if it is sealed prior to field testing under pressure?

Thanks!

We air check ours. Block all the nozzles and fill the spray bar with air than spray the welded area with soapy water and look for bubbles.

Waxman,

Had to get our spray arm welded too a few months ago. Got a professional welder (instead of my friend). Done right the 1st time in about 5 minutes...$20.

Sometimes friends are not cheaper :(

My friend taught himself to weld, but is a pro in that he builds custom exhausts for Yamaha XS 650's. This is his website. http://www.xs650exhaust.com/

He is out of town on vacation.

I had it welded at the local shop today. I reinstalled and it has a leak.

Bringing it back tomorrow.

JB Weld won't adhere to metal against pressure. It can fill a gap or serve as threads if it's not able to move, but if you try to put it on something to hold pressure in, it can handle maybe 5 PSI.
