Washworld Razor - rear meassurement -

Hi all,
I've got a new Washworld Razor. The vehicle's length is detected by a sonar built into the bridge covered by the machine's fiberglass panel. The "beam" comes out of a hole in the panel. I've got a really hard time adjusting this sonar as I have the feeling the hole might be a bit too small. It either don't detect the rear at all or it stays too far away. At one stage it was fine but I adjusted something else and must have stuffed it up again. Especially with some cars (like a Mini Cooper) the beam seems to not getting back to the sensor through the hole. So before I do anything drastic like cutting out a the bigger hole I thought I'd better ask here. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
 
If you have never experienced the fine tech support given by calling WashWorld directly, now is the time for you to do so. If needed they have a 24/7 tech support # which you can call and it will be answered by a tech. There is no need to search for answers on a forum when you can easily contact them directly. That's been my experience since purchasing their equipment 7 years ago.
 
I am in a different time zone and I didn't want to bother WW at night. However, in the meantime I fixed the problem. This sonar has to be absolutely level and pointing down dead center through that hole. It is a bit of a challenge to adjust it as as soon as you tighten it the sonar moves slightly.
 
We have installed several of these. One thing we have found is that because the mount holes are slotted, we need to add flat washers to the clamps. Otherwise they are difficult to tighten. Also, hole in cover may need to be enlarged. If your pit is open below the sonar, you may need to add a flat piece of metal to the pit grates, so the sonar has something solid to read.

Call tech support, make sure you have the latest program software. The newer software has made substantial improvements in rear sizing.

Putting the sonar dead center makes it work 9 out of 10 times now. I think if I make the hole a bit bigger I will get the 100%. But I don't want to over do it. How much did you enlarge the hole? Thanks.
 
Not that much. Maybe 1/4" larger all the way around.

Definitely call Washworld Tech support to discuss BEFORE modifying the machine. There are software updates which address rear sizing.
 
Wow...time goes fast!
6 years later I've implemented all what I was told but still every ~80th car the back doesn't get washed for whatever reason.
I made the hole for the sonar bigger,
I covered the grate in the floor,
years ago I also updated the software (maybe I should do this again),
I adjusted the sonar, and so on.
We replaced the sonar, sensors, cables,...

My technician is at the end of his wits. Washworld didn't know either...
Anyone else having this problem?

I'm not aware of any issues on my machines not washing the rear of short cars only because no one has complained. I was working with my tech and we were doing drywashes using our bodies to cover the eyes to make the machine think there was a car in the bay. I noticed that when I blocked the rear sonar with my hand it had to be past a certain point in the bay otherwise the gantry would travel to the end of the bay, IE I had to be about a foot behind the side sonar before the rear sonar was active.
If you go to program Menu, wash setup, vehicle sizing and hit the VS2 tab, what is the number in the box labeled "delay for finding rear"? mine is set at 20. I don't have the manual in front of me but I think the sonar is inactive for whatever "20" is. Does that mean 20 second, 20 pulses...The sonar puts out clicks 24-7 but the actual sensor isn't always active or the machine isn't alway monitoring that input.

Yes, I already had a play with this but unfortunately it hasn't changed a thing. As far as I remember it sits on 23. Hmm...
 
For that setting minimum is zero and maximum is 100, so I'd guess that 23 is 23% of the way down the rail from the home position. The sensor is about 2' back from the arm so depending on you rail length (what are they...28') you're right around 8' which is fairly close to the end of a Mini. Set it to "5" and eliminate that as an issue

You can actually see the machine slowing down from when that setting is reached (20" or whatever).
But the length doesn't really make a difference. It happens with long or short cars.
It always happens at the first pass. When that is out of whack the following passes will be the same which tells me that it's got nothing to do
with the prox switch but rather detecting the car.

Over the years I watched my cameras: The machine does it on all kind of different cars. Minis, sedans, hatchbacks, 4WD with or without rear spare wheels. It only seems pickups or vans with a sharp edge at the end to be okay.
That is really a hard one. At the moment it is one in every 80th-100 cars but sometimes it can come down to every 10th car.
