Volvo overheats intermittently

I spent a bunch of time today researching this problem, but didn't really get anywhere decisive.

2017 Volvo XC 90 four-cylinder turbo charged and supercharged. Intermittently the engine will overheat very quickly after startup. It seems like when this happens no heat will come out of the cabin vents also. From the research I did it seems like sometimes the electric water pump is not coming on. what I can't figure out is whether this is a water pump issue or a wiring//connector/ground issue.

The car is going to the shop within the next couple days so they can do some diagnosis.

Just putting this on here in the chance that maybe someone has had a similar problem on their car and figured it out. Thanks.

never had a volvo or a turbo, but sure sounds like a thermostat to me. That was a regular maintenance item back in the 70's, 10 bucks and 20 minutes. I dont think I've done one since the 90s though.
