We have more and more operators deciding to vend Gift Cards or VIP Cards out of their ShurVend vending machines for prices that range from $25 to $100 each. We think that this is a terrific marketing idea for both the operator and the customer.

If a credit card system was installed in the vendor to handle these higher priced items, it is usually not a problem. However, if a customer wants to use cash ($10 & $20 bills) in the validator to pay for the gift cards, then we have to make sure we have enough coin in the changer to give the customer change or a Mars bill recycler to return $5 bills to the customer. The VMC (vendor control board) is programmed not to vend if the VMC thinks it can not give change.

We usually set up a vendor to vend car wash products only, so we size the coin tube denominations and bill validator acceptance for product prices from 50-cents to $3. If the operator decides after installation to vend Gift Cards or VIP Cards with values of $25 and up, we can have a problem with returning change to the customer.

We would ask that the operators do some very serious planning about using Gift Cards in the vendor product mix and let us know that is what you want to do. We can then discuss a credit card system, a bill recycler, or the use of $1 coin tubes in the changer to make sure Gift Cards or VIP Cards can be vended without problems.

Careful long range planning of a wash site computer-controlled vending machine is necessary so the operator can change the product mix of his/her machine to meet the always-changing market conditions that evolve daily. It is just good business!
