Vehicle GPS Systems

We have 5 company vehicles and I’d like to put GPS tracking systems on them to tell where they are at all times on the internet. It’s not that we don’t trust our employee’s we just like to know where they are at. Has anyone done this? What system do you use? Costs?

I worked for a distributor that had a tracking system installed on their vehicles. You could log on your computer and check all the vehicles at any time. You could tell how long a tech was on a call and check out how much time the customer was charged. You knew exactly where the techs were and how fast they were going. If they got lost you could give them directions. It had a complete log of all their travels. (Once we found one tech used the truck over the weekend and put on quite a few miles.) We had a company install the system behind the radios in the dash so they could not be tampered with easily. I thought it was well worth the money.

I have a relative whose local company has a tracking system, but the google fleet supervisor is tops--just plug in $99 module into the OBD port on vehicle and in 2 sec you are done. 2min updates, and of course works with google maps. No installation costs and no contracts.

I put on a tracker from Fleetzilla (I think) on three service vans and loved it. Almost immediately two of the techs quit because they lost their free ride. Costs about 9/mo. Since most of these work through the cell phone towers for reporting, you have to remember to unplug them if the truck sits for more than three days, or it drains the battery. They ever track total miles to alert you to oil changes.

The reviews were mostly good, I bought 5, how bad could they be? Circuit City is BK so they might just be dumping stuff, as they have a bunch of stuff at 75%+ off.

We use the “Go Track” http://www.gotrackinc.com system and it’s absolutely the most awesome system that we’ve found. Easy to install, plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. The software is very user friendly, gives you in real time the speed, direction and a bread crumb on the map where vehicle has been. It can be set up so it will e-mail you when it leaves its home location and returns to the home location. It can be set up so when it leaves its home location after working hours or on weekends it will e-mail you. This system is awesome with all the things it will do.

I bought 5 of these and tried one out yesterday. The "manual" is pathetic but eventually I figured most things out. Reading TigerDirect's reviews (it's there for the same price) I figured out more stuff. It tracked good, complete with speed, although, it appeared that the speed was off by 10mph (low), but need to pay attention to that, as it would be nice to fight a traffic ticket.
