We recently were called to a wash using one of our vendors that the operator said had an electrical fire in the changer and was “Out of Business”. This was a new wrinkle and a first for us. The vendor had all the security features we can and do install, (Stainless Mask and Cage) so we were a little perplexed about how the charger could burn up without blowing the fuse. When we opened up the vendor, we found the changer burned into a melted blob of plastic, electric harnesses were burnt in two, and the inside of the electronics cabinet was black with soot. This was a very nasty job of vandalism most likely using some kind of torch pushed up through the coin return. I asked the operator if he had someone that was very unhappy with him.
The heat of the torch burning up the changer ruined the display, control board, and the bill validator. We replaced the burned harnesses, display, control board, bill validator, changer, and the primary Sensit II board that had been shorted out when the harness was burned up. The unit is now up and running.
No matter how much we try to design around weak places on the vending machine for vandalism, someone always goes us one better. We live and learn and try to do better day after day.
