Utility Increase

Anyone get any notices lately about their utilities going up? We are in the Midwest near great lakes so water is cheap compared to most states but we just got a notice saying Water/Sewer is going up 10% start of the new year. Thought a 10% increase is kind of excessive but nothing we can do about it.

NY state utilities have basically quadruped over the last four years. No notices but most of it stems from how we will get our power in the future and how to go about that, as well as an opposition by many to have various choices/options for energy. We have massive amounts of natural gas that many do not want to touch - and many think we should use that resource. By the way, I’m in Buffalo - the junction of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Electrical rates rose from about 15.28¢/kWh to 23.09¢/kWh—a 51.1% increase from 2015 to 2024.

Water:
  • 2025: $2.39 per HCF
  • 2026: $2.54 per HCF
  • 2027: $2.70 per HCF

Unrelated to the car wash topic, my homeowner's insurance has been pretty wild.
2021 $1,444
2026 $5,280

I haven’t had an increase this year but if you’d like to compare rates:
Unit= 100cuft or 750 gallons
Water: $4.83/unit
Sewer: $5.09/unit

Electric 30 cents kWh including all the extra charges

This is Massachusetts with some of the highest utility costs in the country

I think there was an article recently about Chicago water rates tripling in the last few years. In addition to rate increases for water usage their are taxes on the bill as well as sewer charges that did not appear years back

Tell me about it.. everywhere is going up.. I live in Michigan and my electric bill now for a 1700 soft condo is $450/month. Used to be $200.. I guess we get what people voted for, higher prices everywhere, tariffs, gasoline..

Well yeah! It costs more to replace because material prices due to things like tariffs, oil prices transportation costs, all have gone up dramatically! But that’s what America wanted!
