Sonny's 901 Mitter issue

Earl Weiss

Well-known member
Have 2 Sonny's 901 Mitters and area where Gear box and Motor mount to frame have cracked the welds. Equip is about 4 years old. These units have the gearbox and motor on the top.

Welding Aluminum is a PITA so I am going to make a steel plate to put between Aluminum and Mitter and gearbox and Bolt it on with motor and gearbox bolted thru that and the aluminum frame.

Anyone having similar issue?

Within hours after my post they called me and asked for a description and asked me to send pictures. Impressive response. We will see what develops.

Sonny's called. From Photos they say unit is 10+ years old.

Anyway, in a vein similar to my post they are going to fabricate and send me a plate that will go below the Motor and gear box spanning the breach so that the motor and gear box will be lifted off the frame, the plate inserted under and everything bolted together.

I will post details as they become known.

Earl,

You said the mitter is about four years old and Sonny's says it is 10+ years old from the photos - why the difference?

Earl,

You said the mitter is about four years old and Sonny's says it is 10+ years old from the photos - why the difference?

I have had it in operation 2 years and was told it was two years old with 100K cars when I bought the system. We all know how reliable that pitch is but after 25+ years as an operator, with 15+ years experience before that, seeing the condition of the equipment and cloth this appeared to be true. I jumped on it before a couple of other operators who later commented on my new equipment. When I said "Well, it's not new" they said yes it is.

Sonny's says they have been using the legs with the groove down the center for 10 years and mine did not have it so it had to be at least that old. I told them where it came from thinking their records would show when it was sold but they did not mention that. For all I know the place could have been closed up for several years.

No matter really. They are willing to provide a fix. Since no one else seems to have this issue, it's likely not a design or mfg defect, something else must have factored in to the issue.

It's pretty nice to have the manufacturer stand by their equipment and do what is right to resolve your issue. Sonny's gets 2 points in my book for after care service!

Update.

Sonny's has made two plates and sent them to me. Had to cover only the Shipping charge.

Hope this works as a simple fix.
