I retired from my employer 9-1-2006 and had them forward all my 401K funds to my IRA account at Schwab. Currently I control all the investments in the IRA.
What I meant was that like Ghetto Wash, you use your IRA to buy non-traditional assets. CS or Ameritrade, only allow mutual funds, stocks and bonds, etc. Self directed you can buy real estate, gold or silver etc. There are rules and things that you can't do.
I also used to be heavy in index futures. Was making money faster than I could have if I was printing it. The last couple of years cured me of this strategy. Can lose it even faster, and I did.

The biggest problem is finding a trustee that will hold what you want to hold. I confess that I don't know much about Swiss annuities. What is the advantage of a Swiss annuity?
I do know that there are some great opportunities out there yielding 7.5-8% as long as you don't need liquidity.
