Rowe Changer Problem

I have a Rowe control board and hopper in my pay system and have been getting an error code lately and was looking for help in finding the cause. The hopper is in a Jim Colman Entry Wized (touch screen) and I have converted from the Rowe acceptor to the Mars. The error that I am getting is "CK L COIN DETCTOR" I looked up the error code in the instruction manual but didn't really understand what they were telling me to look for, so I was hoping that someone with experience would be able to tell me so possible causes in an easy to follow manner. I tried switching the hopper with my other automatic an still got the error, so that can't be it. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Check left coin detecter.

When the quarters ride up the chain in the hopper they fall out of the hopper and break a beam of light (an LED). The LED is bad or there is some garbage or jammed coins blocking the light.
 
If you don't have a jam next to the red LED . Purchase a new one from KR
as it is getting weak. The LED's seem to go 3yrs and as they get dimmer
that error will happen more often until it won't clear.
 
Thanks for the responses guys, it makes sense now. Is the led obvious once I remove the hopper? Is it near the top right where the change falls out of the hopper? Thanks.

The LEDs are cheap but you can always confirm by moving the led from the left side over to the right and see if your problem also moves. It is normal to replace the led detectors every 5 years or so. Make sure that the black plastic cover over the led is not in the way and causing a problem
 
Yes that is the correct part. That should solve the problem, Buy two, as the other side may need it soon also, or just replace both when you have it apart, as preventive maint.

The other side actually just gave me the same error message yesterday, so I picked up two. Thanks.
 
In all the years I have run rowe changers have never had a problem with leds. But I have had the threads from coin bags get into quarters and then go up and dangle down and block sensor and send same code. The threads aren't very big to block them out.

I finally got around to changing out the LED. The new one is much brighter than the remaining one. But the changer is back on line.

Mine were on backorder and just came in today. I plan on putting them in tomorrow, hopefully it will fix my issues like it did for you.
 
Did you order from Kleenrite?
I got mine from Vendors Exchange.
Cost $10.00 more than KR but I would have spent that in shipping.
Plus they're 10 minutes from me.

I did buy mine from KR, they usually ship next day and I get packages in two days later, but they ended up being on back order so that was the reason for the delay. I put them in a few minutes ago and one of them seems to work fine after testing it with a few bills. On the other, the error code went away and it gives change, but now it gives it one extra coin each time. I have $1 coins in there so you get 1 extra $1 each time. After doing it twice it errors out with "extra coin detected". Any idea what it could be? I have a feeling that it might be a defective led cable as the problem just started with the new led and the manual suggests that it could be an led wiring issue. Thoughts?
 
Check the hopper motor - the brake could be sticking or the tab could be broken off and it's letting it over-run and drop another coin. The fact that it's shutting down when it detects an extra coin dispensed says it's not a problem with the LED at all.

I agree with MEP. It's the brake on the hopper motor. They don't just sell the brake, so you have to replace the whole motor (around $75 if I remember correctly)

On the LED, I don't order the LED assy that was linked to. I order just the LED and remove the old one and solder the new one in. Takes a few more minutes, but it's only a buck instead of $15-$20.

I thought about just changing the LED, but wasn't sure which kind it was exactly. Could you tell me which led you use? I was planning on switching out the leds on the assy that I just took out so that I will have two backups to put in easily when needed. After shipping, the two assy cost me about $48 so I would much rather just swap leds next time.

Is the brake on the hopper something that I could have just broken while changing the led? Seems odd that it started right after the led was changed. I could just switch the hoppers around and make sure that it was the problem, right? I'm not around the hopper now, where is the brake located? Would I recognize it pretty easily? Is it obvious if it's broken?

The hopper motor is located on the coin dispenser assembly (this is the part that the hopper sets on), the same part that you changed the led ssembly. Take the hopper out and you will see the black plastic piece that turns the hopper, the brake is located on the opposite end.
 
It just seems to be too much of a coincidence, so I feel like I somehow damaged something or pinched some wires when I took it out to change the led. I will inspect it further and see what I find. Is it obvious if the brake is broken?
