PUMP PISTON OIL

Does anyone know if it matters what kind of oil you use in the little holes on the head of a cat 530 pump. It's the oil for the plungers not the crankcase.

Is this what you're referring to?

Are you referring to the three small lubrication holes on top of the pump?
According to the Cat Pumps FAQ, those holes are used to lubricate the seals and help extend seal life. Under normal water conditions, additional lubrication is not required.

For high-temperature, low-lubricity, or dusty applications, Cat recommends using Cat Pumps crankcase oil rather than grease.
The information can be found in the Oil section of the Cat Pumps FAQ, under "What oil do I put in the three small holes at the top of the pump?"

I used to use the little bottle of zoom spout oil. I think it's just a machine oil. I used to use it quite regularly and when I took a pump head off the felt in the head was totally disintegrated. Now I don't use any oil in those holes and I've not experienced a problem.

When I remember to oil the wick holes I use the same oil I put in the pumps, ISO 68 hydraulic oil. 40 years ago I used to change the pump oil religiously once a year, now I don't change the oil very often at all. I can't remember the last time I changed the oil. I do check every now and then.
