PDQ Access - Rubber Keypad change

ScottV

Upstate NY
Has anyone ever changed out the rubber number pad on a PDQ Access entry unit. I had one of the 4 buttons along side the LCD display get torn off by someone and my distributor sent me a new rubber keypad template.

I'm somewhat mechanical, and wondered if I can remove the old one and install this one, or should I have the tech's do it. I know it's behind a bunch of circuit boards in that aluminum box, cause I've removed the panel off the back of the box and peered in.

If I can do more damage than good by messing up a circuit board, etc. then I would rather pay to have the trained techs do the job. Just trying to save a little money where ever I can these days!

Thanks in advance for the tips or advice.

You have to take the whole panel off the inside of the door. Look inside the control panel and you'll see the nuts that hold the panel to the door. The nuts can be taken out without removing all the circuit boards but it is "tight", then again, it's not that big a deal to take out all the boards. (You'll need a 1/4" drive ratchet and extensions with metric sockets) Turn power off, take your time and watch what your doing and you'll have no problems.

I agree Ive changed a few back when I was on the the road as a tech. pretty much remove everything in you're way replace the pad and reverse process to re-install. just be gentle with the wiring especially the white and grey cables that go from the board to the LCD they can be brittle

While the above process will work, there is another way that you don't really have to remove all of your electrical components. I will try to give you all the steps.

Remove the white fascia from the face of the Access unit. This can be done by opening the door and removing the 6 nuts (10 mm wrench).

Now, remove the back cover from your conductor box. Should be 5 or 6 phillips head screws depending on the age of your machine. Make sure you are careful removing the cover as the fan is plugged into the board. Note, when putting it back together, the black wire will go on top, with the red to the bottom.

Now, remove the 6 nuts that hold the keypad. You will need a M8 Nut driver or socket and extension. After removing the 6 nuts and washers, disconnect the keypad from the board and pull the keypad/screen face out from the front.

Replace your keypad and put it back together.

This would be the same procedure you would use for cleaning the screen of the Access unit. Look at your maintenance section in the owner/operator book and the steps for cleaning the screen with pictures will be outlined there on pages 9 & 10. If you don't have it, just go to our website and download the manual.

Any questions, please let me know.

Having done a few the way described by jcollins, i can see the way described by koliver would be much easier. especially if you are a little unsure about opening the case with the controller cards.
