I was in the detail shop today when I saw a red Kia soul pull up. I have a friend with the identical car so I was looking forward to a nice friendly chat. Instead, a woman walked in and explained that my car wash damaged her car. My automatic is a three-year-old razor. I said OK and walked out to look at the vehicle. She was a middle-aged woman with her elderly father. She showed me the typical 10 year old Clearcoat peel on the tops of the side mirrors and the center of the hood. I immediately said no I don't think this happened from the car wash. They both became indignant stating that they are 100% certain that these spots were not present before they went into the wash. I stated again that I was sure this didn't happen in the car wash but I would take their name and number and check my cameras and get back to them. Of course I found their vehicle immediately on the cameras. The footage clearly showed that the clearcoat peel was present before they entered the bay.

Thank God for the cameras because these people were completely convinced that this damage happened in the car wash. I'm certain that they would've taken this claim as far as they possibly could if I didn't have proof it was pre-existing. Crazy.

Did you show them the photos? How did they react?

It always amazes me how people are so quick to check their cars for scratches or whatever after a car wash but not every time they park at a store with shopping carts and other cars in close proximity as if the only place a scratch can come from is a car wash. Ive even had people call me and tell me I scratched their car through a touchless believe it to not lol

I while back I was working around the car wash and women came in parked her van off to the side of the car wash. She gets out and said to me right away you owe me some money and I’m not leaving until I get it. I said what seems to be the problem your car wash ripped my driver’s side mirror off. I said let’s go look at it. So, we walk to her van and sure enough her mirror is dangling by the wires. I asked how that happened, my husband went though your car wash and brushes got caught on the mirror and broke it off the van. So, I said if you can show me the brush that ripped your mirror off, I’ll pay for it, you could the happiness on her face, ok boy I’m going t get my mirror fixed. So, I took her over to the PDQ torch free automatic bay and said to her show me the brush that ripped off your mirror? She looked and looked and then she said you just took them out. My reply was “No we’ve never had brushes here; it’s always been a Touch free automatic”. I said are you sure it happened here, now this is priceless her reply was “Aren’t all car washes owned by the same company” they all say car wash on the sign out front so they all musted be owned by the same company. She was pissed when she found out she was going to get her mirror paid for. Come to find out her mirror was ripped off at a car wash 10 miles away. You can’t make this stuff, a good percentage of the public are totally clueless.

Thank goodness for your cameras. My cameras saved me this weekend. Had a guy swear he put $8 in a self serve bay meter. I checked the camera and he wasnt even the driver/ customer. The meter was jammed but the driver didnt lose any money. I invited he passenger in to view the footage but he just cussed me and declined.

I had one last week that demanded i owed him $7 cause the spray gun wasnt working. come to find out he was correct, the wand was broke off the gun. when i reviewed the video footage he was the one that caught the hose on the mirror of his truck and broke it off. Told him id pay him his $7 but he owed me $50 for the damages. He replied how about we call it even. I wasnt having a good day and based on his demeanr i demanded my $43. He handed me 2 $20's and started to walk off, i then told him your $3 short, he reached in his pocket pulled out a $5 bill and threw it in the trash can and said go get it A**hole! i opened the lid got his $5, no biggie right on top. Then he proceeded to want his $2 change. I reached in my pocket pulled out my cash change i carry with me, moved it to the other hand, reached back in my pocket and got $2 in quarters. Needless to say he was not too happy when i threw it in the bays pit and told him to go get it!!

And we let these people operate a motorized vehicle.

2 calls on Sunday within 5 minutes of each other. Lady calls and says she has tried 2 bays and does not get high pressure out of either bay. I ask her if she has turned the dial and explain that spot free rinse comes out at low pressure, presoak is medium and the high pressure rinse and high pressure soap is at high pressure. She did not know that you had to turn the dial to select what you wanted. Next call says he put $2 in quarters in and it is not giving him any time and I better get it fixed. The decal as well as the digital display say $4 or 16 quarters to start less than 1 inch away from where you deposit the quarters.

This drives me nuts. Its not like you have to look for signage, half way across a building such as "where is the bathroom" at wal mart. The signage is within an inch of what they are operating and they still cant figure it out.

I always wonder how people get anything else accomplished in their lives if they can't operate the car wash controls or the credit card Swiper. How do they balance their checkbook? Keep their kitchen and bathroom clean? Handle their finances and save for their retirement? Handle home repairs? Keep their vehicle maintained? Foster meaningful relationships in their lives? Manage the responsibilities of a job?

You are SO RIGHT Waxman! :D Stupid interruptions waste so much time! Most of my experiences were from young people, I guess who were never taught to "try" or "be curious"?? Like Soapy's experience, I would get at least 1 person a day who didn't know that you needed to turn the rotary knob to choose the SS wash setting. WTF? After they complained to me that "nothing works", I would bite my tongue, force a smile, and patiently explain that you "turn the YELLOW knob to chooose which of the 8 wash settings you wanted", while pointing to the Menu sign nearby. Ah, you would see their brain bulb slowly dim on... 💡 When I ask them, "isn't it obvious you need to turn the knob to select?" Their reply was either "No, I've never been here before", or "I didn't want to break it!" I don't know the solution, because young people don't read signs either! 😖

I think we are getting into a second generation of people whose parents just went to the tunnel washes because they were lazy and always only did it that way. New generation is just following their parents lead and never knew what a coin op car wash was. Now when they come to a SS wash they are in total ignorance of the systems and never have bothered to read instructions on anything.
