Meter Door Locks Jammed

Noob

Active member
So I was going to replace one of my beepers and Dixmor timers today. When I went to open the meter I noticed my keys didn’t fit. Then I noticed someone has broke off a key or something in lock mechanism. I have no experience with drilling locks. Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to do that?

Just break the lock. Medeco locks are extremely hard to drill through, but if you're careful you can pry the door open and break the threaded post that the cam is mounted on without damaging anything. Another option is to look for a locksmith's broken key extractor, maybe you can get out whatever that is in there.

You can save a good amount of money if you replace the locks with a tubular key type, if there's no money secured by the lock. In my experience they're much less prone to tampering like that.

If you really want to drill it, check with me or I.B. Washincars. A locksmith will charge you around $200, you can buy the stuff to do it for half that.

Is this a lug lock? With the right tools it's about a 10 minute job to past it. Only takes that long because you need to be careful not to dmage anything else and you should have replacement locks on hand first. Randy taught me how to do it.

I looked at the picture and I'd be surprized if you can get it out with a dental pick, but you could try. It looks like there's something else in the lock on the right. I've done a lot of these locks, there pretty easy.

Thanks guys, a local locksmith was able to salvage the lock and fix the problem for $45. The lock had a flat pick broken off in it. Unbelievable.
You got real lucky on that one. Most of the time when they jam something into the lock you can't get it out. Amateurs who think they can pick a lock, they think it's so easy
