Replaced old 530 with new. Put old gauge, unloader/regulator on head(they were working on old pump). When I start the new pump the pressure gauge maxes out beyond 2000 psi. First time installing new pump so not sure what to do next as I don't think this is normal. I purged the air. Pressure drops to 1500 when trigger on gun is pulled which is where it should be.

You might want to check pressure regulator..unloader..

You probably have the regulator cranked to max. With the trigger tied off, adjust it down until you see the gauge drop below 1500 since that's where you want it, then crank it back up until it just reaches that mark.

If I was to replace the regulator what would you recommend? It looks like the one I have is a paraplate. Sticker is worn off. My other 4 pumps all have JE Adams regulators. Where is the adjustment on the Paraplate?

take one off another pump and put it on the pump you just installed.. just a thought.. I think the adjustment is on top of the paraplate but not sure..

Paraplate lasts a long time for me. You'll need a BR5-2. The Adams 7075 and 7085 aren't bad for the price, but I have a lot more issues with them. IMO the SMC 555 series is the best value-to-reliability.

I adjusted the regulator down to get the idle pressure below 2000. But it brings the gun pressure way down close to 1000. When I get the gun pressure to 1500, the gauge goes all the way past 2000 close to the zero at idle.

It sounds like a bad regulator. The Paraplate uses a set of conical washers stacked alternately so it acts as a spring. If it's been leaking, they rust and no longer work to control the pressure. The sign is rust coming from the weep hole in the side.

Your not adjusting it right. With the pump running tie the gun handle open so it's full on, I like to use a tennis ball. Then adjust your pressure regulator until you get your desired pressure. Sometimes in a pinch I've taken the Paraplate regulator a part, clened the discs, re-lubed the discs when reassembling the regulator and have gotten a little more life out of it while waiting for a new one.
