How do they make it with such poor service?

I just got back from Vegas last night. Several things really confuse me about this town that is in the business of pulling money out of our pockets.

A. Why no coin slot on slot machines? I understand that paying out in coins is not practical, just like paying out massive amounts of quarters in our industry is very poor service (I don't BTW), but why not take what I have and want to give you?

2. When at the airport waiting to go home I went to the slot cashier cage to get bills for the pocketful of change I had accumulated (see "A" above), so I could play their slot machines. The cashier said she could take my quarters and nickels, but not the dimes and pennies...WTF???

III. Mary and I were downtown for a couple of days and went into a casino at FSE called Mermaids. Mary tried to feed a five in the slot machine only to have it rejected over and over. Moved over one machine, same result. She tried two more machines before a waitress came by and explained that the machines don't take "new" fives. Hell, Randy had most of the CW owners taking them a year ago.

3-2. I inserted an "old" five in a nearby 25 cent video poker machine at Mermaids. On the first hand I discovered one of the buttons wasn't working properly so I cashed out and received a bunch of damn quarters.

C.3. Now I've got all of these damn quarters that I didn't want and move over to the next machine. I proceed to feed all of them into the machine and after the fifth one (max credit) it automatically dealt me a hand. I played the hand and luckily got a full house. Thinking that machine malfunctioned I moved over yet one more, same thing. I actually got a straight on that one so it worked out there also. I then stopped an attendant and explained what was happening. He explained that bills will build credit, but quarters must be used one hand at a time.

C.3a. No one seemed to care that the original poker machine had a non working button.

I wish I could get by delivering service like that.

When I was a kid, I remembered many arcades operated in a similar manner. Some had a strict "no refunds" policy, which is downright criminal in my opinion. Someone who is taking money for a service should either provide it as promised or give said money back. I remember time and again where I would complain about a malfunctioning machine, and not only would they not give a refund but they wouldn't even put it our of order or repair it, and it would still be stealing money the next time I went.

I remember a wash owner who ran his wash just as poorly. I watched one of his customers lose money in a bay, who told him and expected a refund. He said "Sorry, there's nothing I can do," and kept walking. He may have thought the guy was lying, but out of earshot of his customer I told him I saw it happen, but he just ignored me. It was no wonder he always complained that the wash performed so poorly.

Even if I thought I could get by delivering service like that, I wouldn't.
