Hole size for LED 7

I Have some vacuum face plates that I want to convert to use Dixmor led7, the opening is 2-7/8w x 7/8h, can this size be used, it looks like it may be a little wide.
 
The standard Lexan plate for the LED7 is 3" wide, so it'll just cover it. The timer is 1/8" wider than that.
