I am wanting to upgrade my video system to a 16 channel system. I am looking for some input on a good DVR system that will give me a clear picture with the ability to view remotely. I am thinking of a stand alone DVR system instead of a card in a computer. I would also like input from anyone who is using IP cameras instead of a DVR, although I am leaning more towards a DVR system.

Liked it so much bought 3 more. Bought addt'l cameras from Amazon. Bought some with audio forthe cash cages. The ones that come with it do not have audio. Supports 4 audio cameras. Added addt'l hard drives. It was basicaly a drop in add.
with cameras set to motion recording holds about 2 week of video.
Have been a few issues. One of 4 lost it's mind with regard to time setting. In a couple of years out of 40 or so cameras had a couple go bad.
Also, DVD burner was a drop in add. Bought inexpensive hard drive and DVD burner from either Best Buy or on line. I forgot.
Initialy bought 19" LCD tv for monitor. Later bought some larger computer monitors but had to add powered computer speakers, since like a computer the DVR does not power speakers.
It is compatible for internet / smart phone viweing, but I do not use it.
Picture quality ranges from great to not so great depending on distance and lighting.

I think that when you want to select a system, you start with your needs. What resolution, frame-rate and storage is required. The higher the more expensive, so its a budget thing.
I have a geovision 16 cam 120 frame rate PC based unit (widely available for about $1600). I have some very good cameras in important spots and some cheaper ones in others. It gives me remote access (plus ftp intervals), 6 months deep of footage and is reliable.
IP cameras are expensive and not sure how you deal with the large res footage from a processor power and storage standpoint when recording.
