I usually just shrug these things off.
I was washing down my ss car wash bay at 10:30am this morning. The car wash not very busy, the roads were still a little wet from the rain we had the past three days in a row. I had just finished and was walking to the back of the bay where the cars enter to go to the next bay over, when the guy comes in the wash from the street the wrong way, drives around the back, does a 180 degree turn, sees me, panics, and proceeds to ram into the end of the bay wall dead center. The only thing that stopped him was the wall itself. I would say he hit it, brakes locked, wheels turned, at about 10 - 15 mph. He then proceeds to back up like nothing had happened and looked at me standing about 5-7 feet away from the point of impact.
My first reaction was to get out of the way.
My second was to call 911. I explained to the operator that someone just rammed into one of my bay walls, please send the police.
The damage to the wall was extremely minimal (a first for me), the front of his mud covered Jeep Cherokee had a push bar and an electric winch. Both were damaged
moderately.
The guy then proceeded to scream at me for calling the police over nothing.
The main reason I called was at the time I had no idea of the damage to my building, but more importantly, this guy needed a lesson in driving etiquette.
Once the police showed up, they asked me if I wanted to claim damage to my property at that time, I said no (there really wasn't any). They took my name phone number and address and will send me a police report if I want to go after the guy in the future for reckless driving on private property, and or, any damage that may arise from the hit itself.
Did I overreact?
I told the guy if he hit a person walking by, me, or one of my customers, he would be in a heap of trouble, feel really guilty, be fined, and have a lawsuit brought against his insurance company and my insurance company........
