credit card fees passed on to customers!?!?

i am considering utilizing the sales tax option through cryptopay to add the 4% fee to the customers charge. .40 on a $10 charge is nothing to them but quite a bit for us when all added up at end of month. i would not advertise as sales tax, i would have in my signage on the meter box that a 4% fee would apply if using card. many other businesses pass along the merchant fees, why should we eat it for everyone to earn their points. like any other price increase the question is always whether we receive push back or is the value and understanding still there. i personally don’t think i will get many people crying over it. has anyone else done this?

Cost of doing business, what is the cost to process cash and coins, including cost of your time? I typically will not go back to a place that tacks on a credit card surcharge, there are other places that sell the same stuff. Easier for the customer to swallow a price increase across the board vs a credit card surcharge IMO. And we try to encourage credit usage, not discourage it at our washes, credit customers spend more on average by a long shot over cash and coin customers

I avoid places that have a surcharge for CC usage. Gas stations, restaurants, even some local small businesses. If a business’s margin is that thin it is time to raise prices.
Paying 4% on $1000 is $40. 4% of $500,000 is $20,000 which does seem like an insane amount.
Just raise your prices by 25 cents or reduce the time per quarter by a few seconds. The customer will never know
I’m more focused on reducing expenses on water, electric and gas than I am on CC fees.
Here’s a thought, can I add a surcharge to every wash to cover my property taxes?

I would not do a CC surcharge at a wash. Our distributer tried pitching it to us and said that a lot of the big industry players do it. 75% of the people pay CC, if your board says $15 you will have to have some type of signage that says CC fee is added on. Just charge accordingly and be upfront with pricing.

When it comes to other industries that do it (contractors and gas stations), there are different situations they have that we do not.

In the case of contractors, you can write them a check instead.

In the case of gas stations, you can do a debit pin transaction and most likely get the cash price.
