convert to led bay lights?

A company came around today telling me I could save a bundle of wattage by converting my fixtures to led bulbs. Has anybody done this or looked into it?

I've done the math on overall savings - the light output is very poor, so you need lots of fixtures. The fixtures are very expensive and only last about 60,000 hours. I factored in operational cost of both, replacement of fixtures with LEDs and replacing them again in 15 years vs. the cost of maintenance on metal halides and figured we'd save about $250 per year. It doesn't seem worth it unless the city offers a program that reimburses you for most of the cost of the conversion, and you still won't have the light that you will with metal halide or good fluorescents.

I'm Building a new wash right now. I considered going to Led but when I talked to a rep at the ICA show, I gave up that idea. The light out put is not there. They kept on comparing to scottsdale 320 watts to a led with about 115 watts. said they would save alot but light wouldn't be as good. Their sales pitch made no sense at all. So I ended up with scottsdales.

Ric,

4 LSI Scottsdale 320 watt fixtures in your automatic bay would make it like daylight. We have some washes with 6 per bay and some with 8 per bay, but it is over kill.

Yes I agree. I am happy with the Scottsdale's in my bays. I was just curious about the claims this company made to me regarding converting to led lighting.

It'll definitely save you money on your electric bill, so their claims are perfectly valid, but the tradeoffs don't really make it worth it in my opinion. There's a local C-store chain that's using the LSI LCD canopy lighting in their new builds - it looks pretty good when you're standing at the gas pumps. When I was looking for the store it was dark, and I passed it three times because I'm so accustomed to seeing the bright canopy lighting from a long distance, but all I could see from the road was what looked like ghosts of gas pumps in an empty field.
