Cat3535 pressure/pulsation issue

GoBuckeyes

Self-Serve and Automatics
Hey guys,
Rarely do I have any trouble with our 3535’s and when I do it’s usually pretty straight forward. This time, however, I’m a bit miffed.
This is an old 3535 on a 1980’s Southern Pride pump stand. It’s been a workhorse. Last week it started pulsing a bit. Now all of a sudden it runs hard, intake hose whips all over and the spray out on in the bay is very violent…. Video doesn’t do it justice. I pulled all six checkvalves out expecting to find one or two broken and they all look great? Didn’t have my big Allen with me to pull the head off….was thinking maybe a cracked plunger? Cracked plunger would let water into the crankcase though and that doesn’t look to be the case? I’ll check the HP seals when I get the head off tomorrow but it makes pressure and there isn’t any water leaking from under the head?
The pump discharge goes to a manifold that has two HP DEMA solenoids, one for arch and one for undercarriage (acts the same for both), and a Giant unloader that relieves back to the pump inlet. The only other thing is a Cat pulsation dampener….was going to take that off and plug the port as I’m not sure how those fail when they do. Pump is getting plenty of water….fed by overhead tank with 2” hose.

Suggestions?

Pull the head. I'm guessing you'll find a seal issue and/or a washed out head. Obviously, inspect the plungers while you're at it. Also, make sure all plungers move, making sure that it hasn't thrown a rod.

Well, a washed out head would have been soooo easy to fix. Wasn’t in the cards for me. I was shocked to find we broke a connecting arm on the crank! Normally when a pump does that you can hear it slapping in the crankcase, ours was not.
We ended up replacing the backend with a 3535 that was sitting on one of our old LW4000’s sitting out in our storage yard. Glad we didn’t scrap those!!

A few years ago I found a SS bay that the pressure wash a little low in. Not too bad, I thought we just needed a little tweak on the regulator and we would have been good. Walked back to the pump stand and found a rod had broken through the side of the case and all the oil had drained out. It was still running though! The pump was original from 1999 and in the eleven years I've owned the place I've changed the oil once.
