There was a time when all car washing was done by hand in a shop that also provided what is now called detailing. Subsequently, things evolved over the years to where we are today.
From a practical standpoint, detailing could be structured into two distinct easy-to-understand classifications:
Preventive maintenance that is marketed as "Appearance Care"... and reconditioning activities that are marketed as "Appearance Restoration".
Appearance-Care would focus on customer convenience factors such as time requirement and retail cost. It would include a more comprehensive form of "express" service and be either freestanding or allied with automatic carwashing. It could be conveyorized to optimize capacity and time issues while still providing enhanced quality.
Appearance Restoration would focus on appearance repairs with various process and procedures certification similar to the collision business and embraced by the insurance industry. Analogous to ICAR, tiered training for both competency and proficiency would provide a benchmark for standardization and uniform cost control as well as performance guidelines.
