Actually Bill it's not that difficult. And you have a parachute in case you fall off. In my misspent youth I was an active jumper and part owner of a jump plane. If slowed down properly you can move around the outside pretty easily. To me it was the pilots who really had to be on the ball.
The more I thought about it, the pilots were really good. It can be challanging to fly formation flight and do it right. But one of those pilots was formation flying while inverted.
The other issue was that not only was he flying upside down, its a glider!! I wasn't understanding how that part had anything to do with the exchange part.
