I found this patent drawing online. I actually saw one of these washes in operation in the late 1970's/early 1980's. I'm not sure how widespread these machines were, but the one I saw was in Northern PA. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3731332.pdf

I have not heard of that practice before. It kind of worked in reverse for me - I visited installations and either knew, or found out who did the work before my initial contact with any distributor. Once I contacted distributors, they then pointed me in the direction of other installations...

You can't beat the presoak coverage on an inverted L machine. Any gantry style machine I have ever seen simply leaves much of the vehicle's surface poorly coated with chemical.
