What's special about an appliance/oven bulb?

I.B. Washincars

Car Washer Emeritus
The bulb has gone out in my oven. I have a bunch of Sylvania 69W traffic signal bulbs that the tightwad in me, wants to use. It is clear like the blown bulb, but physically larger. I looked at appliance bulbs on 1000bulbs and saw no reference to heat in the specs. Is there some reason that an oven needs a special bulb?

Appliance bulbs have thicker glass so they can take the shock of a sudden temperature change without shattering.

Since CFL's are dimmer when it's really cold, I wonder how bright it would get in an oven.

I wasn't, I was trying to make a joke that since CFL's are dimmer in the cold they might be much brighter at 450°F.

Even I like to cook once in a while. You can't cook something in a microwave and have it come out good. Even when I reheat something out of the 'fridge I nuke it just long enough to take the chill out of it and finish reheating it in the oven. It still takes about half the time and heats through better.

You drink microwaves? Are you like Klinger from MASH who tried to eat a jeep in one episode?

The CFL joke went over my head too. I had to go back and read your original post wondering if you really were putting one in the oven.

This thread seems to have taken a life of it's own. Below is a post I copied from the Ford truck forum. Pretty funny, but sadly somewhat accurate.

How many forum members does it take to change a lightbulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed.

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently.

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.

6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ...

Another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid.

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp".

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct.

19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a light bulb forum.

11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum.

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty.

5 People to post pics of their own light bulbs.

15 People to post "I can't see S$%^!" and their own light bulbs.

7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs.

4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's.

13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too".

5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy.

4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

13 to say "do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs".

1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that George W. isn't the brightest bulb.

4 more to get into personal attacks over their political views.

1 moderator threatening lock the light bulb thread.

1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.

BTW, I forked over the cash to buy an appliance bulb, so the dark oven crisis of 2012 is over.

Thank you very much for bringing this up.
Our oven bulb burnt out yesterday.
Went to Lowe's to get a replacement...they didn't have it.
Had to go to Home Depot...they had a bunch.
Total time invested...1 1/2 hours.
But the wife is happy.;)

Ok - that "how many does it take to change a light bulb" was down right funny and an indication that you spend way too long on this forum.

You forgot one entry:

1 - "I'm new to the car wash biz" person to ask what's a CFL and do I need it to make my business better?

My original oven light lasted about 15 years.
Would a CFL last longer?
Probably, if you never turned the oven on. I'm sure the plastic parts would melt if you did.
