Just saw another talking head about hate crimes. Could someone explain to this country boy from Iowa what makes a crime a hate crime? Aren’t all crimes hate crimes? Are there lovable crimes? Hey, give me all your money, and by the way I love you.

A hate crime is one that fits a political need or media narrative at the time it occurs.

Exactly, and that’s why it’s wrong. When you start changing the meaning of words you might as well be speaking Swahili.

A hate crime is a crime comittd against an individual because of their race, religon, gender, etc.

A non-hate crime is just about any other crime like robbery of a store or house or many other crimes that DO NOT attack an individual because of who or what they are.

How is that political?

How is that political?
If a victim gets shot, or hit in the face with a pipe, what does it matter the motivation behind the violence?
The crime itself is what should be dealt with, harshly.
It was an immoral, criminal act that deserves restitution, or what is popularly called 'justice'.
The act is "hateful" regardless of color, creed, sexual orientation, or whatever other flavor one can paint a crime with and does not help heal the victim or prosecute the perpetrator.
In fact, I would argue it does the polar opposite.
We are now seeing trends with more victims and minimal to no prosecutions of the aggressors.

Using the "hate crime" tactic does change a singular incident between the two people involved, into a larger and potentially more dangerous situation when stoked by people who profit from two groups warring with each other on a neighborhood, city, state, or national level.

This is the classic "create a problem and then present yourself as the solution" formula that has been used for far too long causing tremendous damage and death in it's wake.
That's how it's political.

Just to add ... defining a "a crime motivated by hate" sometimes is so politically self serving subjective. Like edredtop said can be extremely hazardous & increases the destructiveness of a crime! Just ask some of the numerous small businesses that were closed for many months in the south central Minneapolis Area because of non stop ... at minimum indirectly politically supported protesting.

Actually, if you’d THINK about it — a “hate crime” (other than something pre-meditated) should be a MITIGATING factor … just as is a so called “crime of passion”. That is, intense, angry, irrational emotion deprives someone of the ability to make a rational decision and choice. Soooo, the more hate-fueled the act of violence, the less severe the punishment “should” be.

BTW, anyone naive enough to believe “hate crimes” are not political, REALLY needs to be reminded how the Left and all their politicians were going bonkers about “End Asian Hate”. Remember all the protests, marches, the Lib political demagoguery and obsessive lame stream Media coverage?!! That is, until — UNTIL! — it was clearly and repeatedly established that the perps of these Asian “hate crimes” were and are virtually all BLACK. .............. Then ……................. crickets.

It's only classified as a hate crime if the victim is a member of a protected group.
If you're white you can't be the victim of a hate crime because white folks are not a protected group.
The tag hate crime carriers a muchstiffer penalty as well

Precisely I'd invite you to go on duckduckgo.com search engine and ask about interracial crimes stats in the US.

Went and did cursorarely look and it seems normal, at least to me. Blacks are about 12% of the population and that’ real close to their new number. Think it was Mark Twain who said there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. Taking a snapshot of current things does not give the entire picture. Thoughts?

If you are arguing that crimes are proportionate to the race of the perpetrator or their victims, FBI stats would not agree with your assessment.

There are some very disproportionate numbers there, illustrating some real world failures by politicians, "community leaders", and a complicit media.
People are dying, losing property, and are being subjected to a myriad of unnecessary political pressures because of the idiots we have framing our current culture.

If you would refer to the stats available from the Department of justice with regard to interracial violent crimes between whites and blacks...I think you may be surprised... But only if your search is done from duckduckgo.com as Google won't even offer the results available in duckduckgo

Well there are many valid points presented here. The sad fact though is none of us can do much to change this. I would rather look at solutions for this. And these solutions need to come from us, not the powers that be.

Who trusts the FBI for statistics. Have you ever heard of a person named James Comey or a little thing called "Russian collusion?"

Once again, I think we're on the same page.
Since they have a monopoly on crime statistics, and the numbers actually go against a particular political narrative, it's possible we may be able to use their data for a few more years ...?
