We rethought our first attempt at vending these bigger bottle sizes and modified our equipment to try a new way to make this work in response to a customer's request. This method changes the orientation of the bottle from the vertical to a horizontal placement in the tray. This method overcomes three (3) problems with the vertical orientation: (1) we don't have to worry about the bridging of this tall bottle against the glass, (2) we don't have to worry about this tall bottle dropping straight down into the hopper and standing upright (If it stands upright in the hopper then the customer can not open the hopper door to retrieve the vended product), and (3) we don't loose a tray in the vendor because of limited vertical space.
We have successfully dropped these larger bottles from the 4th tray in the vendor with no breakage or problems. This allows this vending system to be used in the Visi-Combo (refrigerated) vendor where the bottom 2 trays are dedicated to soda cans, Gatorade, and water bottles. We also have successfully vended a packaged chamois product that is 3-inches in diameter and 10.5-inches long using the same method. Vending these higher priced items not only increases the average price of vended items in the machine, but increases customer satisfaction if there is a demand for these selections.
We continue to experiment in vending unusual products in response to customer requests; we have always told customers that we can vend almost anything if we can get it into the vendor.
