Ticket writer computer

I am switching to a ticket writer pay set up instead of using my automated payment system. I was scouting the competition today and one wash had a "symbol" hand held device that let him put in the wash package, run the credit card and print the reciept from a hip printer.

I would like a similar system - Motorola makes it but I am wondering if anyone has any experience in implementing this type of system and if there are other alternatives that work as well or better than the Motorola platform.

Holy cow those systems are expensive!!!! I have not ruled them out but would really like to find a cheaper way to do this. Seems like I can buy restaurant/retail style pos systems in the 5-7000 range. There is also a quickbooks POS system that is around $1000 but you have to sign up for their card processing system to be affective.

does anyone have experience with this system? Any other alternatives to spending 8-15 grand on the high end system.

All I want is a cash register at the entry to my store that sends the sales to my computer. I would like a simple interface (touch screen preferably) and I want the instant credit card processing ( not the 10 second delay in getting the approval.)
