Splicing rear eyes - how ?

Warning : newbie question

I started getting "rear eye" failures. After reading some posts, I've tried increasing the Y41 amp sensitivity, to no avail. So I've decided to replace the rear eyes (both Tx and Rx). New eyes have arrived.

I spliced the cable in the T-bar, instead of replacing the entire cable feed - I'm assuming this is ok ?
Also, the cable has some shield on the outside - how do I connect the cables after splicing (specifically does the shielding have to be connected too) ?

No.. With the LW 4000 you should have run them back to the J3(box with y41 amp). They will work spliced ,but you will have problems soon. They are very low voltage ,around 4vdc ,or so.

Yes, the shielding has to be connected.
And no, it's a big no no to splice the photo eye cables. Even if you water proof the splice with shrink wrap, it will corrode in the splice and short out. Next time (or when they give trouble again), cut off the old photo eye, tie your new photo cable to the old cable, and pull new cable all the way to the amplifier with the old cable.

Sorry. Missed the shield question. I need to read entire post before responding..

Sometimes you have to splice one when the cable isn't available. Any splice is a potential future source of problems. When splicing these, solder the connections, then use heat shrink tubing, followed up by liquid electrical tape. Then order the cable and have it ready just in case.
