Effect must have cause.

Cavitation is the creation and implosion of vapor bubbles in a pump. The phenomenon occurs when absolute pressure on a liquid falls below its vapor pressure.

If enough energy is created from this, it can cause metal to be removed inside the pump as one commenter mentioned.

This is similar to pre-ignition in a gasoline powered engine - octane rating is related to Reid Vapor Pressure of gasoline.

I agree, a wallowing of metal has probably occurred.

Just to give a bit of an update (it might help someone out there).
Some while ago my pump was spitting water. I was away at the time so my manager pulled it apart and replaced the seals. When he replaced the plunger rubber he must have accidentally squashed the washer underneath the plunger. Pulling it apart the new seal didn't look right. I removed the plunger, flattened the washer, replaced the seal and greased everything and now it works perfectly.:)
