In 2010, PDQ Manufacturing, Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of touch-free vehicle wash systems, created a new charitable donations policy for its employees. This policy allocates money to each employee with those funds able to be donated to charities on their behalf. As part of the policy, PDQ makes periodic donations to local charitable organizations. In July, PDQ announced that it was making a donation to the “Child Life” program at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, WI. The program provides support to children and their families as they cope with serious, life-threatening health-care issues, such as cancer or cystic fibrosis.
“PDQ has donated to a number of worthwhile charities over the past 18 months. When our Human Resources team was recently researching additional local charities to support, and given the services that the Child Life program provides for children who are facing these horrible circumstances, we thought it would be the perfect recipient for our latest charitable donation,” explained Becky Davies, PDQ’s Human Resources Manager. “We wanted to help make their hospital stay a little better in any way that we could.”
While the Child Life program is housed at St. Vincent Hospital, most of the funding for its existence and operation comes mostly through donations. It is operated by two Child Life Specialists—Colleen Drucke and Ashley Zimmerman—and a cadre of volunteers. The Child Life staff partners with a child’s doctors and nurses to minimize the negative aspects of treatment and make the hospital experience a more positive one. They do this through therapeutic play, medical play, preparation of medical procedures, creative distraction during unpleasant procedures, family support, sibling support and grief-counseling services.
