Seemed some imports, noticeably MB, BMW, VW had large accumulations of brake dust hard to get off. I seem to notice less and less of this? My imagination?

That used to be a big problem. I believe the oem's switched brake pad formulation to decrease brake dust due to customer complaints. That and the fact that brake pad technology improved, and they could get the same or better performance with less dust.

My daughter's Jetta still produces decent amount of brake dust though. I think they reserved the low-dust pads for the more expensive models.

From personal observation - when I started installing ceramic brake pads on my vehicles 10 years or so ago, "suddenly" my wheels weren't filthy all the time.
