Last week the Maryland Ways and Means committee in Annapolis tried to move forward on a new bill (HB1515) that would impose a new 5% sales tax on services that were never taxed before (including carwash services).
the Maryland Chamber of Commerce alerted its membership (including the Mid Atlantic Carwash Association) to the proposed new law in time for the association (and others) to arrange to testify and submit letters at the hearing (held last Monday), to oppose the proposed law.
The MCA as well as other service trade organizations and business owners highlighted the unseen negative issues that such a law would create.
As a result of the quick mobilization and testimony the proposed new law appears to be tabled and not going to move forward.
if it was not for the actions of the Chamber of Commerce and the various industry associations speaking up in a clear and forceful voice representing business owners the law would have probably been moved forward with potential harm to the carwash industry in our state. This is a prime example how being part of an association that represents carwash owner interests can be valuable and important for you as a carwash owner.
regardless of the state you reside in if you are a carwash owner please consider becoming a member of your carwash association as numbers do matter and there is strength in numbers.
in full disclosure I am a member and on the board of the MCA.
