how to clean an engine

what is the best way to clean and engine? steam cleaning? how do you do this?

1. cover vital electronics
2. presoak with alkaline (high ph) from 3 sides.
3. pressure wash/rinse from 3 sides.
4. repeat as necessary.
5. dress (from 3 sides) with water based dressing if gloss is desired.
6. enjoy.
