Field repair coupling - HP water

I have a leak above 1 bay from the HP line. It was a break a few inches behind the end so rather than replace the whole hose I cut it behind the break and put on a fitting. I probably messed up the install as the leak came back. Before I go back on the roof any tips/best practices for using these couplings? Was definitely a pain, had to grind off some of the jacket at the end to get it together.

I assume you used a reusable fitting? If the hose is old and brittle, it can be tough to get a repair to hold. The only time I repair a hose is if it looks relatively new and it rubbed through on something.

Yeah reusable, haven't been up to look it yet. I do remember not being able to thread the hose all the way and get the pin in far enough to thread, thinking it just wasn't done well enough.

If the outer jacket of the hose rotten then replace the hose. When I use a reusable hose fitting I cut the hose about the about inches from the end or break and use a rat tail file to bevel out the inside of the hose a little bit. Then screw on the outer collar about ½ or ¾ of the way on the hose. Put a little bit of oil or soap on the end of the fitting that screws into the outer collar and then tighten it until it bottoms out back it off and then tighten the outer collar until you can’t tighten it anymore then tighten the inter fitting/end until it bottoms out. This is way I was taught how to do it when I worked in the hose shop by the old timers when I was a young apprentice.

That's what I needed. I don't even think it got bottomed out. Filing out the inside end will help.
