DVR Card Copy

All,

So one of my Geovision DVR Cards died unexpectantly. I disconnected the video feed from the card interface coax cable (like I've done dozens of times) and the card stop displaying video from any cam. I tried the card in another PC with known good camera/cable/Pwr Supply...same result. So I need a new card and its $700 + tax for a new GV800 16ch card. Ouch!!! This is the second time a card has failed.

So I decided to call a local guy to see if he had any in stock as I wanted one quick and I do not like to have the wash 'blind'. He did not have one and it was going to be about a week. However, he had a made in China 'copy' (I think Geovision is made in Taiwan). He assured me that these copies were very high quality... price $200. I was skeptical, but got one the next day and paid via Paypal (so if it wasn't up to snuff, I could get my money back ASAP).

I get the card, have a look at it...yes very high quality build and identical to my bad one except newer firmware. Plugged it in my PCI slot, hooked up the cables and back in business. I notice no difference except for the extra $500.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. I'm ****ed at Geovision for 2 bad cards in two years and happy to save the $500 + tax. However I know this must be a big problem for them.

The reason the other card cost $700 is because they actually paid for the development costs to design the card. The Chinese are just making cheap copies, most likely using inferior parts. Keep us updated on how long this device lasts.

Yes I agree and understand. I guess I don't feel so bad about Geovision as they're last two cards didn't last as long as they should have in a very good environment (cool, clean with conditioned power with UPS).

The copies from China are getting better and better at fooling people. My son bought a pair of Beats Headphones (latest craze for kids). The box was sealed and look very high quality. The headphones that retail for $500 (he paid $350) were such good copies that we were the only ones out of the 20 pairs this guy sold to discover that they were actually fakes. We got our money back via Paypal, but I was extremely impressed at the level these guys are pumping out this stuff!

Thks Just Clean!

Some interesting cameras. Now getting very close to HD cams (700 lines) for less than $150. Some really cheap PTZ cams too.

Happy New Year...Big

Big,
Now that you have run the Chinese copy for a bit have you had any issues with it or has it been fine? I'm considering buying one and throwing it in a PC. That aliexpress web site doesn't seem to list system requirements for the card. Do you know what those might be? One last question, does the copy offer a DNS site to log into?

Thanks

Big,
in one of your posts you said you had 32 cameras. I am wondering if both cards (genuine & non-genuine) work well together. I am also very interested in getting a LPR software to put the number plates into a database. So if I ban someone and he came back I would get an SMS. But this software is VERY expensive. I know that Geovision sell the software but looking at their licence plate photos I would say that their detection rate can't be that great in my environment. I know of better software around but at a cost (~$10,000).

So far I have had more problems with the original GEO card than the replica. The replica has worked flawlessly so far and integrated fine with my existing Geo software. So no issues.

I do not have LPR software. I know its expensive.
