Has anyone else experienced motor failures due to water intrusion?

This tunnel has 16 motors driving various brushes, mitters, etc. We have replaced 8 in the last 3 years since new and they continue to fail - sometimes multiple failures in the same equipment.

AVW uses the Sumitomo gearmotor with a 22:1 reduction. That motor package, according to Sumitomo, is rated IP55 which is not wash-down rated. Further, AVW replaces the factory conbox with a different box to make clearance in the mounting frames of the equipment. It seems there are multiple point of potential water ingress.

Since last year, when installing a new motor, I pack the conbox with dielectric grease to abate water intrusion. This has been successful for the most part but we had one failure regardless.

Anyone else out there with this experience?

P.S. AVW has discontinued this motor in the newer equipment in favor of an SEW-branded setup that does not fit in the same space as the Sumitomo. Further, they still sell the replacement Sumitomo but with no warranty. How can a company legitimately sell a known defective-designed product and claim no responsibility?

I’ve seen other manufacturers use motors that are not wash down duty rated and they usually explain it by saying the motors are “all above spray level”. Well, it’s a car wash - water doesn’t just stay below the spray level- it goes everywhere!

40 years ago we stated using hydraulics instead of electric in the tunnels. Electric is great when new. A few years of moisture, corrosion and dirt made issues with conduit, connections and motors a problem when it comes to repair and replace. People have short memories.
