If Steve Okun will not agree with me that Full Service Detailing Services, which they are now come to be called are not RESTORATION SERVICES, would he and others agree then, that what the car wash industry calls Express Detail Services, be legitimately called, MAINTANCE Services?

Why or why not?

PONTIFICATION: "Annoyingly pompous and dogmatic"

It makes good sense to refer to detailing (full service or otherwise) as AUTOMOTIVE APPEARANCE-CARE... and offer it as a sensible alternative to what you often refer to as "maintenance". ;)

While the definition of "maintenance" does broadly describe what is technically done during the AUTOMOTIVE APPEARANCE-CARE PROCESS, the commonsense understanding universally is more towards "the preservation of an ongoing process or condition, a perpetuation of being maintained in good condition working order... or constantly repaired."

It seems to be more descriptive of both the act and the benefit to simply say that carwashing and detailing are part of the process of AUTOMOTIVE APPEARANCE-CARE. It is more mainstream to use sensible terms that are easily understood.

PONTIFICATION: "Annoyingly pompous and dogmatic"

Once again, I've been referring to detailing as AUTOMOTIVE APPEARANCE-CARE for the past 40-years, and customers have a clear, unmistakable understanding immediately.

• APPEARANCE-CARE - normal preventive maintenance of washing, cleaning and protection of interior & exterior surfaces. Routine application of surface conditioning products.
• APPEARANCE REJUVENATION - More intensive cleaning and restoration of interior & exterior surfaces such as buffing, steam or extraction shampooing, malodor removal and removal of industrial or environmental fallout.
• APPEARANCE REPAIR - Correction of moderate to severe damage or decomposition of interior & exterior surfaces such as paint or plastic oxidation or stain removal, interior upholstery repairs, invasive damage such as scuffs, scratches and paint blemishes... and just about everything short of paint refinishing at a bodyshop.

Bottom-Line: Pontificating through the use of terms that seem more "professional" to a few fails to distinguish your mission. A "sanitation engineer" still picks up garbage and the persnickety use of special descriptive language fails to mask the basic task or image. It may make the title sound better... but the consumer prefers commonsense jargon.

Hope this helps to blow the smoke away...

guys: there is far more to detailing than marketing and, specifically, naming things.

that is but a small portion of the business and i feel far too much time is spent on this particular concept within this forum.
