AirLift Door Design flaw?

Roz

Well-known member
We have two newish (a few years young) Airlift XRS doors. The doors use rail weather stripping to help keep the doors in the vertical rails and to make a better seal. The design flaw is that the vertical weather stripping is in two pieces. Seems to be by design as all 4 of my doors have the same two piece weather stripping. Where the strips meet the lower strip seems to bend into the railing making the sliding of the doors less than smooth. I fix the strip to be aligned with the upper portion and it does not stay that way for more than a cycle or two. Wondering if anyone has seen the same issue and has a simple solution? Thought about using Flex Seal tape where the two pieces meet but the tape does not stay attached long. Any creative suggestions?

That's not a design flaw. That is so when someone hits the door and it comes out of the track it can reload back into the track on its own. Thats why it's in two pieces. If it was all one piece it would break that strip. If you cannot get it to stay out thats because it was ran with it in the track for too long after install. You can buy new sections or you can remove the sections and flip them around so they will be bent outwards instead of inwards. You could even possibly use a heat gun and heat them in place then bend them out.

I agree with Roz, that design worked when AL was using the bristols system, this new weather strip is awafuly flimpsy.

What I am doing now to prevent that corner to worn out and get stuck on the door, is setting the opening just right at the end of the longer portion when possible.

So I fixed the weatherstrip and the door still is jerky only when it comes down so the strip is not the issue. I cannot find any obstruction in the railing too. Any other ideas of things to check?

Since it's only happening when it comes down take a look at the door reset flaps on each side of the track. Make sure there not pointed in towards the track. If they are the wind bars on the vinyl door could be getting caught on them. If they are bent in a little you can unbolt them and reverse them.

Appreciate the suggestion. Ended up that the motor was dying. It passed away this afternoon. New motor comes Friday

Airlift tech support suggests that some gear teeth probably broke off as the door had issues even when I held the weather strip entirely away from the door.

When I opened the motor housing I saw some oil on the bottom of the motor. Guessing it lost oil and seized or something happened such that the gear broke. Frustrating that stuff happens when we were slammed which prevented me from doing a more thorough review of the door

Anyhow moving on. Another great day even with the bay down for a few hours as I tried to repair the motor.

Glad you got it taken care of. I have a few new motors on the shelf if you need sooner. You should take the old one apart after swapping it out and see if you can see anything. If you have time.

How much for the motor? Where are you located as I am wondering if it shipping or a drive?

As a curtesy I need to check with my installer to see if he already ordered the motor. If not then I will purchase from you. I should know tomorrow.

Thanks!

update: my installer already ordered a motor for me so I will give him the business. Thx
