PISTON VS PLUNGER PUMPS

WE PURCHASED SOME NEW PUMPING PLANTS ( 10 PUMPS) DURING A REMODEL THAT CAME WITH NEW PLUNGER PUMPS, AFER A YEAR AND A HALF OF PROBLEMS WE REPLACED/ RETROFITTED ALL PLUNGER PUMPS WITH PISTON PUMPS AFTER HAVING REPLEATED PUMP PROBLEMS, SEAL FALURES. WE LITTERLY THRU THE PLUNGER PUMPS IN THE TRASH DUMP. AFTER INSTALLING PISTON PUMPS PROBLEM WENT AWAY PISTON PUMPS CAME FROM SAME MFG OVER HAUL IS A LITTLE MORE COSTLY BUT OPERATION COST IS GREATLY REDUCED

I remember talking to the guys from Cat pumps at the Atlantic City show.

They told me if you are gravity feeding or otherwise have positive pressure at the pump inlet the plunger pump (Cat 310 style) is the way to go.

If you need to draw water to the pump (suction), then a piston pump is the way to go.

Your mileage may vary.

If they were Cat something was wrong with your setup. Plenty of people on here can testify to Cat 310 or 5CP plunger pumps lasting well over 20 years.
