Since this made national news, some of you may already be familiar with what has happened in our town. Last Saturday, one of our police officers was ambushed and gunned down on a remote exit ramp on his way home. Someone evidently placed debris in the road and lie in wait for him to come by and remove it. As of right now, they don't appear to have any suspects. He left behind a wife and two young sons, one of which is special needs. There has been an outpouring of support from other law enforcement agencies and the public as a whole. Over $100,000 has been donated for reward money as well as a fund set up for his family. I want to make a donation to the family as well, but I have another idea that I want to run by you guys.

I am thinking of donating all of my receipts from next Saturday. I hope I could get the paper, radio, local cable station, and website to advertise it as well. I feel that I could generate many times the money that I would donate on my own, but I don't want to look as if I am trying to capitalize on this heinous crime for personal gain. Has anyone else done anything like this? Any thoughts?

Sounds like a good plan - you could also have a representative of the fund on hand to accept direct donations as well.

Pat,

You are doing this from a kind heart - not for your business. Do what you need to do to make it successful using your business skills and do your most for that family. That was so sad.

Pat,

Anytime a business owner does something like that there is a certain amount of uncertainty etc. From my perspective it took courage on your part to do what you did ... not just from a financial standpoint ... but also from a moral awareness & support view.
