We have a Cat 623 piston pump the is eating cups every few days. It is an older pump with serveral thousand hours on it. Do the cylinders need to be replaced, or is there another problem? The inside of the cylinders seems to be smooth, and the fit tightly when the new cups are installed.

Thanks,
JPRB

You may not be getting enough water to the pump. Cavitation basically boils the water at room temperature and can shred the cups.

I've checked the strainer, and it's clean. I'll check the intake hoses for a collapsed hose.

Thanks,

I changed all my intake hoses to 3/4" with a 3/4" check valve.. The 1/2" seemed to starve the pump somewhat. The larger hose allows for a nice unrestricted flow. I have 25 year old pumps working great.
