Use cards only...make it go away.

I have an ACW-5 that is displaying "Use cards only". It accepts coins and bills correctly, but the cards only message remains. It was raining so I didn't mess with it long. I cycled the power off for a couple of minutes, but no luck. How do I make it go back to the correct welcome prompt?

Mr I.B. danged,

I know this is not funny but are you absolutely positively sure that Brad Quay is not trying to "accelerate" the demise of something?:D

Usually when there is a problem, hitting the yellow action button on the controller will tell you what it is. Have you tried that?

Never mind.

I got it fixed. I went and powered it down again, but this time in addition to flipping the rocker switch I shut off the power at the GFCI. Evidently, the rocker switch doesn't kill the 24V stuff.

It seems like a lot of electronic devices just need to be thoroughly rebooted which sounds like the case here. Hopefully, it will not be something that starts requiring frequent reboots as in just being a one time fluke.

It does seem like some merchants encourage more credit card usage vs cash. Having an electronic sign that doesn't direct them to the option for cash would not help the use of cash. I can see why you would be concerned.

I am glad nobody in our circle of friends was falsely accused of deliberately trying to set the stage for the elimination of all cash.:)

Cash is still king in my book and cash payment will probably never disappear. However, to deny the penetration and rapid grown in the use of plastic payment may be to the detriment of self-service operators.

People between the ages of 18 to 30 years or Gen-Me/Gen-P (p for plastic) are predominately cashless.

Studies show well over 50 percent of their collective payments is made using credit and debit cards. Other studies show nearly 100 percent are cashless.

My youngest kid is 22 years old, has an I-phone, electronic tablet, spends time on Facebook, text messages, buys a lot of her stuff online and has a debit card stapled to her forehead. She rarely carries any cash.

She does not use the self-service wash located only a 1/2 mile from the development where she lives with her mother because it is set up for bills, coins and tokens.

This group of people is the next upcoming generation of self-service users.

Food for thought

Demise

Mr. Walsh -

I must say it took me a little while to get a grasp on what it was you thought thought I was trying to accelerate the demise of:confused:.

I must be a little slower than usual today. I am definitley a big fan of cash. Not that I have as much of it as I would like, but I am still a big fan. No need to worry about conspiracy theories in this case. :)

Just checking with Mr. I.B, (aka Pat Hall) --- juuuust in case --- no need for anyone to be offended. It is good to see that you still on our side in the year 2012. The below "a little too much credit card propping up" best fit for everyone position is what is not accurate.

The opponents of the dollar coin are saying:

1. nobody likes the dollar coins
2. credit cards are the best fit for everyone even for smaller transactions --- that is everyone except for a few (less than 5%) intensely fierce "their own in house" VTM card people in the laundromat industry --- an industry where Hamilton also serves.

A bipartison sponsored bill before the House by David Schweikert & another bipartison sponsored Senate bill by John McCain & Tom Harkin solves the problem without creating any significant hardship for either industry nor for retail or banks. They need our support so that what is right for our country finally happens --- somewhat over 15 years overdue! Better a little late than never.

Canada has more than proven that weight & other concerns really are "non issues"

Either bill also solves the problem of the Susan Bs from which we are separating a few hundred out of 6 thousand mixed dollar coins that we just got from our Mega Bank yesterday. Our bank is forced to go back to their mixed with Susan Bs now that the President Coins for commerce use were discontinued & made no longer available in their non mixed "with Susan Bs, slugs & tokens" form for the banks.

Everything points towards the Current Obama Administration & the Federal Reserve as the ones most at fault for this debacle!!!

Knowing Pat Hall I am pretty sure he does not mind me blowing his cover & veering slightly from the original post objective --- a long as it does not happen too often!:)
